Line of Enquiry
As stated in the previous key post, the whole scope of the
project is to collaborate with different students across the entire art school,
to create some form of art that reflects on the following; Chance, Memory, and
Time. Our story is inspired by the works of Tracy Emin’s bedroom setup art-décor
and Vertigo for the animation fragment of the project. By collaborating all
mediums together our project has become more valuable and diverse for audiences
to witness and see for themselves. With being inspired by Tracy Emin’s infamous
bedroom setup art-décor has allowed our story more meaning and the film vertigo
gave us the idea of implementing an animated sequence showing audiences
indirectly how the depression cycle functions, in the mind of a troubled individual.
As this project is personal to me, I came up with the idea
of producing an animation which fits in with the topic at hand, however with a
fresh and vibrant twist to it. With the theme being evolved around a video game
it gives all audiences alike with or without the experiences of the condition,
but can interact with whats going on comfortably and minds at ease. Space
Invaders and Galaga are two arcade games that my animation piece is inspired
by, due to the simplicity of understanding all of the visuals and can be easily
reflected, to create something more suitable for our subject at hand; which
that is based around the following areas ‘Chance, Memory, and Time’. The
animation itself is produced in 2D animation software Toon Boom Harmony Pro,
which reduces timing constraints.
With it being a two dimensional animated
sequence, there was also the design of the piece to think about. The Swedish
Winner of the Eurovision Song Contest inputted animated visuals behind him,
which as in aid to tell a story of him being bullied as a child at home.

It was inspiring to
me how the creative team of David Nordström and Benke Fredrik Rydman displayed the story of Måns Zelmerlöw’s rough childhood, in a way people can be
comfortable with watching and interacting with the lyrics of the song too. It
states in the reference above that he was ashamed of being alone when he was a
child which inspired me to produce a spiral of depression sequence, which will
appear towards the end of the entire animated film itself. (see the image
above)
For the piece of sequence
produced, it can clearly be cut down into three separate sequences, which can
blend with other visual elements within the entire project. From the angry
hearts at the start of the animation to the spiral of depression towards the
end, can be split into three equal parts consistently. There are some moments
in the film which can indicate the character will be having a
‘downward-into-depression’ scene, which will be a lot more effective and
audiences can understand how the character is feeling throughout the project (refer
to the video link supplied above)
